What will you be doing @ 3:00 PM on Memorial Day?

What will you be doing @ 3:00 PM on Memorial Day?
I hope you will take at least a minute to pause and remember those who served for our country @ 3:00 P.M. May 25, 2015- Memorial Day.

What’s it really about?

An informative quick read about:    The Real Reason Why Americans Celebrate Memorial Day.    By EMILY SHAPIRO May 22, 2015, 1:43 PM

Memorial Day Weekend usually conjures up images of backyard parties, beaches and beer.

But Memorial Day is more than just a three-day weekend marking the unofficial start of summer. It’s actually been an official national holiday for over 40 years aimed at remembering those who served in the armed forces.

Here is a brief look at the history behind the holiday and how people are expressing the true meaning of Memorial Day through photos on social media.

A few years after the end of the Civil War, May 30 was established as “Decoration Day” — a day to decorates veterans’ graves with flowers. May 30 may have been the selected day because flowers would be in bloom throughout the country, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a national holiday and placed on the last Monday in May, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website says.

In December 2000, the president signed into law The National Moment of Remembrance Act.   “The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation,” the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website says.

REMEMBER to take at least one small moment of silence in remembrance.

OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY
San Antonio is the first city in Texas to adopt the 2015 International Codes and this represents a milestone in the City’s efforts to improve the efficiency of new buildings and reduce energy costs for homeowners and businesses. Analysis shows that new homes will be 18% more energy efficient and commercial buildings will be 26% more efficient than those built to current code (IECC 2009). According to the Building Codes Assistance Project, homeowners will realize a payback of less than one year from the upfront cost of additional energy efficiency measures and beyond that will realize savings of over $20 a month for the life of the home. See the 2015 IECC Overview for details on specific changes contained within the code.

This also supports local efforts to improve air quality because fewer emissions will be produced through the generation of electricity from fossil fuels. San Antonio has a target for all new construction to be net zero carbon by 2030 and the adoption of the 2015 IECC puts the City on track to meet this goal (as shown on the Progress to 2030 plot). The International Codes are revisited every 3 years and new opportunities to save energy through new construction are expected within the 2018 code cycle. The Office of Sustainability will work with the Development Services Department and local stakeholders to review these new codes to ensure San Antonio remains a leader in energy efficiency and sustainability.

What is Green Construction

What is Green Construction.

What is Green Construction

Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction, to renovation and deconstruction. However, the most significant benefits can be obtained if the design and construction team takes an integrated approach from the earliest stages of a building project.

Potential benefits of green building can include:

 Environmental benefits

Enhance and protect biodiversity and ecosystems

Improve air and water quality

Reduce waste streams

Conserve and restore natural resources

 Economic benefits

Reduce operating costs

Create, expand, and shape markets for green product and services

Improve occupant productivity

Optimize life-cycle economic performance

 Social benefits

Enhance occupant comfort and health

Heighten aesthetic qualities

Minimize strain on local infrastructure

Improve overall quality of life
