If we take care of our earth we will be able to see the beautiful shades of green that mother nature blesses us with every spring and summer, year after year.

The Department of EnergyEnvironmental Protection Agency and Take Care of Texas are a few organizations that I often refer to for information.  Each have different initiatives and target audiences but all inspiring for the same end result.

Amongst multitudes of websites, suggestions, and pleas, hopefully you will find some relevant actions that you can implement to “go green” and to help save our earth.

If you have heard any of these phrases:

OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY
San Antonio is the first city in Texas to adopt the 2015 International Codes and this represents a milestone in the City’s efforts to improve the efficiency of new buildings and reduce energy costs for homeowners and businesses. Analysis shows that new homes will be 18% more energy efficient and commercial buildings will be 26% more efficient than those built to current code (IECC 2009). According to the Building Codes Assistance Project, homeowners will realize a payback of less than one year from the upfront cost of additional energy efficiency measures and beyond that will realize savings of over $20 a month for the life of the home. See the 2015 IECC Overview for details on specific changes contained within the code.

This also supports local efforts to improve air quality because fewer emissions will be produced through the generation of electricity from fossil fuels. San Antonio has a target for all new construction to be net zero carbon by 2030 and the adoption of the 2015 IECC puts the City on track to meet this goal (as shown on the Progress to 2030 plot). The International Codes are revisited every 3 years and new opportunities to save energy through new construction are expected within the 2018 code cycle. The Office of Sustainability will work with the Development Services Department and local stakeholders to review these new codes to ensure San Antonio remains a leader in energy efficiency and sustainability.
